About this page
This guide answers the specific venue questions people search for most often. For the comprehensive list of every known smart-glasses ban with dates and enforcement details, see where are smart glasses banned. For the legal framework (recording laws, consent requirements), see are smart glasses legal?.
Can you bring Meta glasses on a plane?
Yes. No airline currently prohibits passengers from wearing smart glasses during flights.
What you should know:
- TSA does not list smart glasses as restricted or prohibited items. They go through the X-ray machine like regular sunglasses.
- In-flight recording is restricted. All U.S. airlines prohibit recording crew members and other passengers. Recording in aircraft lavatories is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 1801.
- Staff bans exist but don't affect passengers. Delta Air Lines (July 2025) and Southwest Airlines (March 2026) prohibit their own employees from wearing personal AI smart glasses while on duty.
- International flights — once you land, local recording laws apply. Two-party consent jurisdictions and EU GDPR countries have stricter rules.
There is no known case of a passenger being asked to remove smart glasses on a commercial flight as of July 2026.
Are Meta glasses banned in casinos?
Yes, in most casino environments.
- Nevada Gaming Control Board (May 2014) — encouraged all Nevada casinos to prohibit smart glasses on gaming floors. Cited risk of covert computing and card-information sharing.
- Caesars Palace — confirmed ban under existing regulations prohibiting computers and recording devices while gambling.
- Royal Caribbean cruise casino — smart glasses with audio/video recording banned (February 2026).
- Las Vegas Strip properties — most enforce no-recording/no-computer policies that cover smart glasses, but enforcement varies. If you're unsure, ask the pit boss.
Prescription smart glasses are not exempt. Casinos advise bringing non-smart backup eyewear.
Are smart glasses allowed on military bases?
Generally no.
- SCIFs (all branches) — Sensitive Compartmented Information Facilities have long prohibited all personally owned portable electronic devices with recording or transmitting capability. Smart glasses are explicitly covered.
- U.S. Air Force (January 9, 2026) — unauthorized to wear smart glasses with photo, video, or AI capabilities while in uniform. Some installations extended the ban to civilian contractors and visitors.
- Other installations — policies vary by base commander. Many have existing bans on personal recording devices in sensitive areas that cover smart glasses by default.
If you're visiting a military facility, leave smart glasses in your car. Even if not explicitly banned at that installation, bringing recording-capable eyewear through a checkpoint will likely cause issues.
Can you wear Meta glasses at a concert?
It depends on the venue and artist.
Known concert/event bans:
- Co-op Live, Manchester (March 2026, Harry Styles) — all recording devices including smart glasses banned. Phones placed in Yondr pouches.
- Masters Tournament, Augusta National (April 2026) — no-camera policy actively enforced against smart glasses.
- TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht (September 2025) — camera glasses banned in house rules.
Most venues have general "no unauthorized recording" policies but don't specifically name smart glasses. In practice, enforcement depends on whether staff can identify the glasses — which is difficult to do visually.
Are smart glasses banned in gyms?
In some UK gyms, yes. In the U.S., not formally.
UK gyms with explicit bans:
- Kingdom Gyms (Birmingham, December 2025) — recording glasses not permitted.
- Flight Fitness (July 2026) — all smart glasses brands banned; must remove on entry.
- PureGym (340+ locations) — no recording on premises; policy covers smart glasses.
U.S. status: No major chain (Planet Fitness, LA Fitness, Equinox, 24 Hour Fitness) has announced a formal smart-glasses policy as of July 2026. All prohibit recording in changing rooms and restrooms under existing rules, but the gym floor remains unaddressed.
Can you wear smart glasses in court?
No, in most U.S. courts that have addressed the issue.
Major bans:
- New York (July 20, 2026) — all 1,240 state and local courts. First statewide ban.
- Philadelphia (March 30, 2026) — all FJD buildings. Criminal contempt possible.
- Western District of Wisconsin (February 2025) — federal courthouse prohibited-items list.
- District of Hawaii (June 2025) — all courthouse areas.
If you wear prescription smart glasses, courts generally require you to bring non-smart backup eyewear. See full court ban details.
Are smart glasses allowed in schools?
Increasingly restricted.
- SAT testing (March 2026) — College Board explicitly prohibited smart glasses, including prescription models.
- South Korea CSAT (November 2025) — AI smart glasses banned in all exam halls.
- Utah public schools (July 1, 2026) — bell-to-bell ban on emerging technology.
- Alabama (2025-2026) — wireless devices including smart glasses banned during instruction.
- Universities — UConn and Cal State Fullerton have exam-specific prohibitions.
Can you wear Meta glasses on cruise ships?
Varies by cruise line.
| Cruise line | Public areas | Casinos | Restrooms | Private cabins |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MSC Cruises | Banned | Banned | Banned | Allowed |
| Royal Caribbean | Allowed | Banned | Banned | Allowed |
| Carnival | Allowed (except embarkation) | Not specified | Not specified | Allowed |
MSC is the strictest — smart glasses are not allowed in any ship public area. Royal Caribbean targets specific high-risk zones. Carnival has the lightest policy.
The pattern across all venues
Every venue ban shares a common enforcement challenge: staff must identify which glasses are smart glasses and which are ordinary eyewear. This worked in the Google Glass era (distinctive prism display) but does not work for Ray-Ban Meta (standard Wayfarer frames).
Venues that take the ban seriously — like New York courts — require self-reporting and voluntary surrender at entry. Venues that cannot control entry (public gyms, open concerts) rely on posted policies and hope for compliance.
Radio-based detection is the technology that bridges this enforcement gap — identifying camera glasses by their Bluetooth broadcasts without depending on visual identification or wearer honesty.
